Chopin

The Chopin is a delightfully furnished studio apartment across the street from St. Louis University. Everything is included: Top-quality bed, all linens, fast WIFI, and a fully stocked kitchen.

Before your arrival, the Chopin will be stocked with welcome teas and treats, freshly roasted coffee, and light breakfast foods to start your stay. You'll also find a range of cleaning supplies and complimentary toiletries (soap, shampoo, conditioner, Q-Tips, etc.). To keep our rates low, we don't replenish these items during your stay.

The Chopin has a laptop-friendly desk, high-speed internet, and a smart TV with an antenna for local stations. The full kitchen includes a large gas range, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, dishes, cookware and utensils. Yes, there's a hair dryer, iron and ironing board. All linens are included.

We accept same-day reservations, if you contact us by 2 PM Central Time USA. Upon making a reservation, you will be notified of SF Shannon House Rules. Creation of a reservation indicates acceptance of SF Shannon policies.

If you plan to be in residence longer than a month, we accept monthly payments. There is no lease, but you must submit a rental application and pay a security deposit. Long-term guests must provide proof of their own renters insurance, or pay a nominal monthly fee for Tenant Liability Insurance. This insurance is underwritten by Great American Insurance Group and covers accidental or unintentional damage to the premises, but not to your personal possessions.

State lodging taxes apply to stays less than 30 nights. City lodging taxes apply to stays less than 32 nights.

GUEST ACCESS
The apartment is all yours! There is a shared laundry room in the basement, and shared lobby and hallways with other guests and residents. Located on the third floor of a seven-story building; you may access the apartment by stairs or elevator.

PARKING
Parking is first-come, first-served with a permit that you'll receive upon arrival. Please note that demand is greater than supply. If permit parking is already full, you may park at any nearby metered space at no charge between the hours of 7 PM and 8 AM Monday through Saturday, and all day on Sunday.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
The Chopin has window-unit air conditioning. We pull the air conditioner out of the window by the middle of November to clean it and store it for the winter. We reinstall the air conditioner in April. If you feel like you need an air conditioner outside of this schedule, please discuss with us. We will do our best to accommodate.

In the winter months, the heat is controlled by a central boiler that runs steam through the radiators. The boiler is scheduled to run 3 to 6 times a day, depending on the weather forecast.

You may hear noise from the neighboring apartments, as the historic charm of the building does not include soundproof walls. We've had some guests complain about odors in the hallway, from residents who cook, smoke marijuana and/or cigarettes. We no longer rent to smokers, and want the building and grounds to be smoke-free! We've had this policy since 2009. However, when we instituted the policy, we did not force our residents who smoke to move. (Many residents who have lived in the building for decades.)

IS IT SAFE?
Since all of SF Shannon’s vacation rental apartments are in the historic core of St. Louis, we occasionally receive the question: “Is it safe?” This question is impossible to answer, because we typically know nothing about the person asking it. The co-owners live within walking distance of each SF Shannon vacation rental. Rachel, Karen and their spouses have raised their families in their respective neighborhoods, and have always felt perfectly safe.

WHY THAT NAME?
The apartment is named after Kate Chopin, an American author who moved into a house only three blocks directly west of the apartment building shortly after writing her best-known novel, The Awakening. Kate Chopin's former home, at 4232 McPherson Avenue, still stands. This was also Kate's last address. If you visit, be sure to admire the magnificent American Chestnut tree directly across the street from her home.
