Abbey
Available for stays of 28 days or longer, the Abbey is a lovingly furnished studio apartment across the street from the main campus of St. Louis University. Weekly housekeeping included. The Abbey is available for an all-inclusive $1,200/month. Full details are here.
The Abbey provides a home for up to two people in St. Louis' Central West End. Walk to St. Louis University, Cortex, and the Grand Center theater district. Barnes Hospital and SSM/St. Louis University Hospital are less than two miles from the Abbey.
The Abbey features a top-quality Queen-sized bed and high-speed internet, with a large desk to provide a laptop-friendly space. The flat-screen TV has an antenna for local stations and Roku for streaming any services to which you subscribe. The large galley kitchen is fully equipped for basic meal preparation. All linens are included. Yes, there is a hair dryer, iron, and ironing board.
Before your arrival, the Abbey will be stocked with freshly roasted coffee, welcome treats and teas, and light breakfast foods to start your stay. Included are cleaning supplies and complimentary toiletries (soap, shampoo, conditioner, Q-Tips, etc.). To keep rates low, we do not replenish these items during your stay.
Once you are in residence, we will set up weekly housekeeping on a mutually agreed-upon schedule. The housekeeper will dust, vacuum, swap out dirty towels and linens, and make the bed with fresh sheets. Housekeepers do not wash dishes.
The building has a laundromat in the basement, with six washers and six dryers. Use an app to operate the machine.
Upon making a reservation, you will be notified of SF Shannon House Rules. Creation of a reservation indicates acceptance of SF Shannon policies. You will always find best pricing by booking direct at SF Shannon.
State lodging taxes apply to stays less than 30 nights. City lodging taxes apply to stays less than 32 nights. You may save by booking for 32 nights, even if you plan to be in residence only 28 nights.
Smoking is prohibited in the apartment or anywhere on the premises.
PARKING
Parking is first-come, first-served with a permit that you will receive upon arrival. Demand for permit parking is greater than supply. If you cannot find a permit parking space, you may park at any of the abundant nearby metered spaces at no charge between the hours of 7 PM and 8 AM Monday through Saturday, and all day on Sunday.
You do not need a car to live here! This is a "walk anywhere" and bike-friendly neighborhood, with easy access to transit. Within walking distance are supermarkets, numerous restaurants and bars and coffee houses.
IS IT SAFE?
Since all SF Shannon vacation rental apartments are in the historic core of St. Louis, we occasionally receive the question: Is it safe? This question is impossible to answer, because we know nothing about the person asking it. One of your hosts (Karen) lives three blocks from the Abbey. Karen and her husband raised their sons in the neighborhood, and have always felt perfectly safe, day or night.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
The Abbey is a private apartment on the third floor of a seven-story building. Access the apartment by stairs or elevator. There is a shared laundry room in the basement, and shared hallways with other guests and residents.
The Abbey has window-unit air conditioning. We pull the air conditioner out of the window by the middle of November to clean it and store it for the winter. We re-install the air conditioner in April. If you feel like you need an air conditioner outside of this schedule, please discuss with us. We will do our best to accommodate.
In the winter, heat is controlled by a central boiler that runs steam through the radiators. It is our goal to heat the Abbey in the 70-degree range. If you want more heat, the Abbey has an electric space heater that you are welcome to use.
The Abbey overlooks a busy arterial road. If you are a late or light sleeper, we have earplugs in the apartment. You may hear noise from neighboring apartments, as the historic charm of the building does not include soundproof walls.
WHY THAT NAME?
One of the owners is an Anglophile at heart. Rachel had just named another vacation rental apartment in the building the "Westminster," because that apartment overlooks Westminster Avenue. This reminded Rachel of her time at Westminster Abbey. When she saw the view of the St. Louis Cathedral from the Abbey windows, well! That was that. There could be no other name. Plus, the name simply fits the space. You will see, if you choose to make the Abbey your St. Louis home.
