Abbey
The Abbey is a fully-furnished studio apartment across the street from St. Louis University. Everything is included. You'll sleep on a top-quality queen-sized bed, enjoy a full kitchen and fast internet service.
Before your arrival, the Abbey will be stocked with freshly roasted coffee, welcome treats and teas, and light breakfast foods to start your stay. You'll also find a range of cleaning supplies that you're welcome to use and complimentary toiletries (soap, shampoo, conditioner, Q-Tips, etc.). To keep rates low, we don't replenish these items during your stay.
Free permit parking is available, first-come, first-served. There are not enough permit parking spaces for all the residents and guests who need parking. You may park free at any of the numerous metered spaces nearby after 7 PM and before 8 AM Monday through Saturday, and all day on Sunday.
You don’t need a car here. This is a "walk anywhere" and bike-friendly neighborhood, with easy access to transit. Shopping, numerous restaurants and bars, coffee houses are nearby.
The flat-screen TV has an antenna for local stations and Roku for you to stream any services to which you subscribe. The full kitchen includes a large gas range, microwave, toaster, dishes, cookware, coffee maker, and everything you should need for basic meal preparation. Yes, there's a hair dryer, iron and ironing board.
Dynamic pricing ensures competitive rates. SF Shannon has weekly and monthly discounts, which are auto-applied at time of booking. Contact us if you will be a long-term guest who wants your reservation divided into monthly payments.
We welcome same-day reservations if you contact us before 2 PM Central Time USA. Sorry, while we all love them, pets are not allowed at the Abbey. Smoking is prohibited.
Upon making a reservation, you will receive an email with SF Shannon's House Rules, and be asked to agree to them. Your creation of this reservation indicates acceptance of SF Shannon's policies.
Guest Access:
The apartment is all yours. There is a shared laundry room in the basement, and shared hallways with other guests and residents. The Abbey is on the third floor of a seven story building; you may access the apartment by stairs or elevator.
Parking:
Parking is first-come, first-served with a permit that you'll receive upon arrival. As mentioned above, demand is greater than supply. If permit parking is full, you may park at any nearby metered space at no charge between the hours of 7 PM and 8 AM Monday through Saturday, and all day on Sunday.
Taxes: State lodging taxes apply to stays less than 30 nights. City lodging taxes apply to stays less than 32 nights.
Other Things to Note:
The Abbey has window-unit air conditioning. We pull the air conditioner out of the window by the middle of November to clean it and store it for the winter. We re-install the air conditioner in April. If you feel like you need an air conditioner outside of this schedule, please discuss with us. We will do our best to accommodate.
In the winter months, heat is controlled by a central boiler that runs steam through the radiators. The boiler is scheduled to run 3 to 6 times a day, depending on the weather forecast. If you get chilly between runs, the Abbey has a wall-hung electric heater in the main room.
The Abbey overlooks a busy arterial road. If you are a late or light sleeper, we have earplugs in the apartment. You may hear noise from neighboring apartments, as the historic charm of the building does not include soundproof walls. We've had some guests complain about odors in the hallway, from residents who cook, smoke marijuana and/or cigarettes.
SF Shannon no longer rent to smokers, and wants the building to be smoke-free! SF Shannon has had this policy since 2010. However, when we instituted the policy, we did not force residents who smoke to move. (Many residents have lived in the building for decades.)
Since all of SF Shannon’s vacation rental apartments are in the historic core of St. Louis, we occasionally receive the question: “Is it safe?” This question is impossible to answer, because we typically know nothing about the person asking it. The co-owners live within walking distance of each SF Shannon vacation rental. Rachel, Karen and their spouses have raised their families in their respective neighborhoods, and have always felt perfectly safe.
If you're traveling with an infant, we have a pack-and-play available for a $10 one-time charge. If you'd like to use it, please let us know.
FAQ:
“How far is it to the Fox?” The Abbey is about 0.6 miles from the Fox. You should be able to walk there in 10-15 minutes. We’ve had lots of actors working at the Fox stay with us!
"How far is it to the America's Convention Center?" This apartment is about 3 miles from the Center. It should be drivable in about 15 minutes, or you may take public transit, which would take about 20 minutes.
Why that name?
Owner Rachel is an Anglophile at heart. She had just named another vacation rental apartment the "Westminster," because that apartment overlooks Westminster Avenue. This reminded Rachel of Westminster Abbey, and when she saw the view of the St. Louis Cathedral from the Abbey's windows - well! There could be no other name. Plus, the name simply fits the space. You'll see, if you choose to make the Abbey your St. Louis home.
